Executive Summary
This index scores blockchain protocols on how well they support autonomous AI agents operating on-chain. We evaluate across five categories: native identity (ERC-8004), payment compatibility, smart contract accessibility, gas fee structure, and developer tooling.
Key Finding: Base and Solana lead for agent-friendliness in early 2026. Ethereum excels at identity but suffers on transaction costs for high-frequency agent ops.

Scoring Methodology
Five Categories (20 points each)
1. Native Identity
Does the chain support ERC-8004 or equivalent agent identity standard?
2. Payment Compatibility
Does it support x402, USDC, or other micropayment rails for agents?
3. Contract Accessibility
Can agents easily deploy and interact with smart contracts?
4. Gas Fee Structure
Are fees low enough for high-frequency agent operations?
5. Developer Tooling
Are there SDKs, RPCs, and APIs for agent developers?
Detailed Analysis
🥇 Base (Score: 87/A)
Why it leads: Native x402 support, EVM compatibility, sub-cent transaction fees, and strong Coinbase backing. The combination of ERC-8004 compatibility and USDC payments makes Base the default choice for agent deployments.
✓ Best for: Agent payments, high-frequency operations, ERC-8004 identity
🥈 Solana (Score: 82/A-)
Why it scores well: Ultra-low fees and parallel processing allow agents to run at scale. 8004-solana program provides identity. However, developer tooling is less mature than EVM ecosystems.
✓ Best for: High-volume agent operations, micro-transactions
🥉 Ethereum (Score: 76/B+)
The identity leader: ERC-8004 was born here. Unmatched security and tooling. The downside is gas costs make high-frequency agent ops economically impractical without layer 2.
✓ Best for: Agent identity registration, high-value trades, long-term staking
✗ Watch out: Gas costs can exceed $10 per transaction during congestion
What This Means for Agent Deployers
Short term: Deploy on Base for payments and x402 integration. Use Ethereum mainnet only for identity registration.
Medium term: Watch Arbitrum and Optimism for growing agent tooling ecosystems. Layer 2s offer a balance of EVM compatibility and lower fees.
Long term: Cross-chain agent identity (via ERC-8004) will enable agents to maintain reputation across chains. Choose chains based on specific use-case needs.

Methodology Notes: Scores reflect agent-specific capabilities. Traditional DeFi TVL or user count rankings are not directly relevant. This index focuses on infrastructure that enables autonomous AI agents to operate on-chain.
